HMSC Mermaid
The HMSC is one of the shipwreck sites in Australia where you can dive. This ship was constructed in Howrah, India back in 1816. This is a very small vessel that has a wood carvel and cutter rigged. It has an overall length of 17 meters, its beam is 5.6 meters and the draught on this ship is 2.7 meters. This is a famous ship because it was Lieutenant Philip Parker King RN who used the ship. He used it to survive some of the dangerous parts of the coastlines of Australia. The shipwreck is located near the Frankland reefs.
SS Yongala
You can find the shipwreck of the SS Yongala at the central part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. It is near Cape Bowling Green and Townsville. It is positioned at the bottom of the seabed. It is properly intact at an angle of 60 to 70 degrees. This is a wonderful place to go shipwreck diving because this ship is very rich in history and there is already a lot of marine life living in this ship.
AHS Centaur
The AHS Centaur was a merchant ship that was taken over during World War II and was used as a hospital ship. This ship took the survivors of the HSK Kormoran in the Indian sea back in 1941. However, during 1943, as it was taking more casualties, it was torpedoed down by a Japanese Vessel. This made the ship sank. It lost 332 crews and 268 other people. This ship is rich in history, making it a great site to go shipwreck diving.
Hive
This is the only convict transport shipwreck in the mainland Australia. This is used by Captain Nutting during 1935. This ship was discovered by the Heritage Branch only during 1994. You can be able to find this shipwreck near the Wreck Bay and Jervis Bay. Some parts of the ship are already buried under the sand. This is an amazing site to go shipwreck diving because you will be able to see a different structure as it is a convict ship. This is a more exciting shipwreck dive to go to.
Iron Knight
This shipwreck was found by fishermen at Bermagui, NSW. This ship sank back in 1942. This was torpedoed by a Japanese vessel, killing 36 crews. This is the only armed cargo vessel that can be seen in this area. This site is considered to be very dangerous. The danger was confirmed in 2007 when a diver died attempting to study the ship. This is one of the armed ships during the World War II. This is a historical ship and this is a good site to go diving to. However, this site is very dangerous, you must do the right precautionary measures and you must be with the right people.
